Augmented Reading Lesson Plan
Technology: Augmented Reading
Link to Proficiency: https://newsela.com/read/lib-book-review-alice-wonderland/id/42384/
Targeted Learners/Content area: I would certainly use this with middle schoolers in an ELA classroom! I think Newsela has the potential to be helpful in all subject areas, though.
Lesson objectives: The objective of this lesson would be to have students read this Newsela article at various reading levels to help students use it as a model for writing an interesting review of whatever book they choose.
Lesson context: This Newsela lesson would be part of an ongoing practice of having students write reviews for classroom books. It would be used over and over again throughout the year as a mentor text for helping students understand what a good book review looks and sounds like.
Goal of technology use: The goal of using this technology would be to give students at all reading levels a way to access mentor texts to use as models in an ongoing book review project.
Brief description of how technology will be used with students: I think it would be really cool to assemble a Goodreads-style set of classroom reviews for each popular book in the classroom library. Students would use this Newsela article on Alice in Wonderland to help them understand how to structure their own book reviews, and to figure out what to include in an engaging review. Then, students would tape or attach their book reviews on or near the book for which they’ve written the review, so that the next student who picks it up can get a sense of why it’s worth reading.
