Social Media Lesson Plan
Technology: Social media in the classroom!
Link to Proficiency: https://www.weareteachers.com/social-media-activities-for-ela/ I don’t tend to like lists of activities like this, but I thought some of these ideas for English teachers were pretty awesome.
Targeted Learners/Content area: I think I’d use this idea with kids anywhere from 7th-10th grade in an English classroom that involved reading lots of different books and in which kids had to summarize what they’ve been reading regularly.
Lesson objectives: The objectives for this particular (probably ongoing) lesson would be to have students condense their chapter summaries into something they could Tweet out or post on Instagram. Forcing students to limit their word-count and get creative by writing concisely for social media would make sure that students could identify the most important ideas and concepts in a given chapter or book.
Lesson context: I would use this strategy throughout the year, as students read through different books. I think that there are always opportunities and reasons to understand a text in a simplified format, or to be able to synthesize what you know about a reading and tell others, so I don’t think this strategy would be limited to single lesson or unit.
Goal of technology use: Using social media as the vehicle for students’ chapter summaries would encourage their own digital literacy, help them learn to write concisely, and allow me the opportunity to see and assess their gaps in knowledge and skill set.
Brief description of how technology will be used with students: I would create class Twitter and Instagram accounts. At the end of each week, students would add their book/chapter summaries to the accounts on a rotation. The following week, their partner or another member of their book group would be responsible for posting the summary.
