Screencast Lesson Plan
Technology: Screencast
Link to Proficiency: http://youtu.be/ig_K6cCRbx0?hd=1
Targeted Learners/Content area: This video is designed for 6th-8th graders in an interdisciplinary setting, so that they can be prepared for a lesson to be fully fleshed out at a later date (Tuesday in the video).
Lesson Objectives: The learning objectives for this screencast were mainly to have students understand what work they would be doing on Tuesday for the Mars colony project, know what their roles and tasks will be and how to be prepared for class, and be able to start their activities quickly and smoothly for class once they enter the room. It was also intended to get them hype and engaged, and give them some ideas, concepts, and questions to think about to prime their thinking engines for the next stage of the project.
Lesson Context: This lesson occurs in the middle of a two-week, interdisciplinary project on creating a colony on Mars, including where the colonists would live and how they would get there, what maps they would need to get around, how their government would function, etc. The video would be viewed briefly on the Sunday or Monday before the larger lesson, so that students would have time to get ready for the coming work. It also falls in the early part of the year when students might need more scaffolding for how to use and view Google slides effectively, so the video should be helpful.
Goal of technology use: This screencast has the awesome advantage of allowing me to get kids started thinking about the topics for the coming week ahead of time, so that they come into class already excited and ready to go. Rather than trying to get their minds working to come up with ideas and questions on the Tuesday of the larger lesson, doing a screencast of slides that prompt that thinking saves valuable time and energy for me and my students. I also transcribed the English captions for this video, so that students can have multiple modes of interpretation and engagement with the video itself. Students can read along in several different languages, which should help them to absorb the information in a variety of different formats.
Brief Description of how technology will be used with students: I will send this video out to students over the weekend, having told them on Friday that they will receive a video sometime before Monday morning. They will watch the video before coming to class on Tuesday, and complete an informal assessment (just me asking questions related to the video) to make sure they watched it and that they’ve brainstormed before embarking on the next stage of the project. I will also have the slides up on the board for an additional reminder for students and good exposure to the comments, as well as a word wall for them to refer to and helpful chalk drawings we could use to move discussions along as a whole class when we talk through the video and concepts. I will also send out the slides as a shared document, so that students have access to the links in the slideshow to click while they watch the video itself.
